Today we must leave our village and head to our first apartment and the chance to experience “living locally.” But before leaving the village we needed to do some hiking. So on Sunday morning Tommy and I took off into the mountain to explore the many hiking trails in this region. It was not easy hiking, but the experience was worth the effort. In many ways this part of the forest looked a lot like Vermont.
We hiked for a few hours during which we had great conversations and saw beautiful scenery. The village we are staying in is located in a small valley so we hiked up to the top and then circled the mountain (maybe big hills) until we had made almost a complete circle. Quite by accident we found ourselves in the Hohencken Castle ruins but we did not stay because our plan was to go back and get Sarah and head back to see it as a family.
Once we picked up Sarah and headed back to the castle we realized it was only a 20 minute hike from the hotel. While at the castle the sun came out and we had a beautiful view into the valleys and across to the other mountain tops. We had our last meal in the village, called an Uber and moved into our new apartment in downtown Kaiserslautern!
