We are in Barcelona, and while not the plains, it sadly is a bit rainy! This is my first trip to Spain but over the next couple of months we will be here a few times. For now, it is only Barcelona, but in a month or so we come back to Seville and then the Gibraltar region (another Mark Twain Innocents Abroad site on my list).
Barcelona is great. Compared to many places we have visited it is an amazingly clean city. The people are friendly, and it is aesthetically pleasing. We did not have time to take the cable car across the city, but we did visit the cathedral, walk the waterfront, admire the famous Christopher Columbus Column, and drool over a lot of Paella Restaurants!
One of the nice things about this stop is that we are here on a weekend, so we were able to attend mass at the cathedral. The building is incredibly inspiring and since the mass is the mass, even in Spanish I could follow along. We actually attended two services, we observed one of the offices and later; after touring the building, we attended a mass. I think the very young acolyte/thurifer used an extra big scoop of incense because his four friends were nearly gagging, and one was literally crying. And I was half-way way down the aisle and I continued to smell incense even after taking a shower.
I did not expect to love Spain so much, but I do, and I can’t wait to be back in a month or so. And, Sarah and I both think we might want to do a vacation at some point that focuses on Spain.
