We’ve Moved to Naples, Italy!

We have left Turkey for Italy. We have moved into a quintessential European apartment in Naples just off from Piazza Garibaldi. Arriving after dark it was a bit unnerving, but the next morning we realized it was truly a great spot. The entrance, inner courtyard, and balcony are just what you would expect to see in an Italian movie.

Our first morning we had a latte and pastry, and then walked to the 13th Century Duomo di Napoli or Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary. It is a beautiful Gothic Style cathedral that was far more impressive inside than out. In fact, rather than being located in an open space that allows it to stand out, it is actually tucked in between other buildings and you don’t notice it until you are on top of it.

We spent some time inside just sitting and meditating on things religious and otherwise. We then visited the chapels, saw the crypt of St. Gennaro (Patron Saint of Naples), and looked at the marble and gold statue of the Assumption of Mary by Pietro Bracci.

We then headed home but on the way were called to eat pizza and have a beer and wine! After which we had a work zoom and then settled in for a quiet night.

In the future is of course a visit to Pompeii, Mt. Vesuvius, the Archaeology Museum, and there is a small art gallery showing a new work comparing David’s battle with Goliath to modern issues. It will be perfect for a couple of my Honors Courses so I want to see it and get some visual examples.

Until then, here is video of our stereotypical apartment and a few pics of our day at the Cathedral.
